WWE fans sat down on Sunday night to see WrestleMania 33, not just because the pay per view event is the biggest one of the year for the company, but because The Undertaker would likely be taking to the ring for the last time.

A number of longtime spectators were upset that Regins would be the one to face the Deadman in his last match and likely become just the second man to defeat him at the Showcase of the Immortals.

Now, news is surfacing that this wasn’t the original plan for the main event and company officials had wanted John Cena to be the last man to face Taker in the ring. Fans would have likely taken to that suggestion much more quickly than they did with The Big Dog.

After all, fans have been requesting to see the Leader of the Cenation face off with The Phenom for years now and both men seem to have been warm to the idea, but things kept going in different directions when the time would roll around every year.

Vince McMahon had wanted Roman to take on Big Evil for a while and with this being the last available opportunity, the time was right for the man in charge. Cena had been originally slated to be in that spot, but no one can change the boss’ mind.

Writers quickly had to reroute and came up with the Cena and Nikki Bella tag team match idea, which fans were lukewarm to intially. That match proved to be better than advertised and even had a WrestleMania moment when Mr. Money in the Bank proposed to his longtime girlfriend.

According to Cageside Seats, the proposal angle is what spurred McMahon to make this change so late in the game. He argued that Cena’s moment would absolutely be bigger than him facing The Undertaker.

On its face, that seems absurd to a wrestling fan, but social media response has indicated that the WWE Chairman might have had a point afterall. Many outlets have covered the proposal story and it gained a ton of traction that has lasted days after Mania was over.

Even so, the chance to see two titans of the business clash on the grandest stage of them all is something that fans will now never get to see. People were still so mad on Monday night that they booed Reigns viciously during RAW.

In the end, things worked out for the WWE as they got two matches that still have people talking about them, but fans will be left wondering what could have been for the foreseeable future.
