It’s very rare that teams on off-days get something good in the NBA while they are not on the court, but that is exactly what happened to the Boston Celtics on Friday night. They managed to register a clear win without ever taking a single shot.

Now, that win wasn’t in the standings and won't show up in any box scores. This time their reward will come in the NBA Draft later this summer. They hold the Brooklyn Nets first round pick as a result of trading Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett many moons ago.

When the Phoenix Suns defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder last night, they escaped the dubious distinction of finishing with the league’s worst overall record.

The Nets are now locked into the worst record spot which means that the Celtics will have the best chance at the number one pick.

Going into this season, retroactively looking at that KG and PP trade made pundits see it as a heist more than the calculated gamble that it seemed to be as it was occurring. At the time, Brooklyn was chasing LeBron James and the Miami Heat for the Eastern Conference crown.

Fast forward to now: The Big Ticket is retired and The Truth will soon follow suit and all fans of the reformatted franchise will have to remember that period is their new arena and the memories of being beaten soundly by the Big 3 in Miami.

This can only be seen as a massive win for the Boston club who will have an overwhelming shot to land one of the first three picks in a top-heavy draft. One of the knocks on the C’s heading into this season is that they lack the kind of superstar talent that defines the current crop of contenders.

Isaiah Thomas is a good player, but he and Al Horford could use all the help they can get if they are going to hang with the Cleveland Cavaliers. In the end, their franchise faces the same dilemma that those Brooklyn teams did all those years ago: stopping LeBron James.

This summer might mark the first time that Danny Ainge can make use of all the assets that he has been stacking as the general manager for Boston. He might just get a crack at Markelle Fultz as the first overall pick if the ping pong balls bounce the right way come this summer.
