With Antoine Griezmann leading the line alongside Fernando Torres for Atletico Madrid in the Madrid derby at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday, it was a perfect opportunity for Manchester United to assess how their summer target faired against the best.

There are very games in world football that are of the same magnitude as playing Real Madrid - with Barcelona and Bayern Munich arguably the only other two teams currently able to claim they are on the same, or similar, level.

Griezmann has made a name for himself in his past few seasons at the Vicente Calderon and as he led Atleti's attack at the Santiago Bernabeu, there was no better location for the France international to prove his credentials.

The 26-year-old was named the Player of the Tournament at Euro 2016 but, despite already being held in high esteem, doing it across the course of a season, at club level, is another matter completely.

And Griezmann showcased some last-gasp heroics for Atletico, as his 85th-minute equaliser was enough to snatch a point from Real, who had taken the lead early in the second half through Pepe.

Once again, the Frenchman proved just how important he is to Diego Simeone's side, and why a host of Europe's top clubs, including United, are eagerly looking to acquire his signature in the summer.

But there was one moment in particular that caught the attention and will have United fans purring at the prospect that Griezmann could potentially link up with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and co. at Old Trafford during the summer.

Inspired Griezmann showcases his brilliance

Prior to Griezmann's equaliser, the Atletico star produced a moment of brilliance that so nearly created a goal of the season contender in one of the biggest, most important, matches in world football.

Griezmann threw himself into the air to produce a thunderous overhead kick that required Keylor Navas to be on high alert, while the offside flag was raised after the forward had strayed marginally beyond the last man.

It can only be imagined what scenes would have followed if the Frenchman's audacious attempt had found the back of the net in a game of such high magnitude.

Atletico forward shocks reporters

But while it was not to be on this occasion, Griezmann netted with five minutes to go to bag his 15th league goal of the campaign and maintain the significant 10-point gap between Atletico and their table-topping local rivals.

La Liga looks set to elude Griezmann this season, but while the Red Devils are confident it will be his last season in Spain - with a potential move to United on the cards - the Frenchman shocked reporters by refusing to rule a move out to Los Blancos.

"I don't rule anything out," Griezmann told reporters regarding a move to Real, per Goal. "But I'm happy at Atletico."
