What Diego Simeone did to Zinedine Zidane after Atletico's late leveller

A draw was the outcome that both Madrid sides had hoped to avoid as it plays directly into Barcelona’s hands going into the season’s home stretch.

But the result was probably a fair one, as neither side did anything spectacular to win it, though Antoine Griezmann can consider himself unlucky not to have found the net twice when his overhead kick failed to find the target late in the second half.

The diminutive France international eventually did get on the scoresheet, though, with just minutes remaining to cancel out Pepe’s opener for Real.

And while all eyes were on the action, there were some inflammatory antics on the sidelines as Diego Simeone looked to wind up his counterpart Zinedine Zidane.

The Argentine tactician is well known for his behaviour in getting other people in trouble, or for simply getting under the skin, and though he tried, he simply couldn’t penetrate Zidane’s icy cool exterior.

With tensions running high, Griezmann’s late equaliser proved to be an outlet for the emotions built up over the course of the 90 minutes, and apparently none felt it more than Simeone himself.

When the final whistle sounded, Simeone jumped around his technical area in ecstasy and launched into a slightly over zealous celebration right in front of the Real Madrid bench.

Check the video below. While we can appreciate Simeone’s enthusiasm, their own title challenge ended a long time ago, and this game simply became about getting one over on their neighbours.

However, saying that, the two men have endured their fair share of battles on the pitch with regards to this fixture, as well as in the dugout.

Simeone and Zidane are both totemic figures at their respective clubs, but Simeone came out on the losing side as a player more often than not, given Atleti’s fortunes at the time.

Much is being made of the incident in the Spanish press, but there was also a warm handshake between the two, which has apparently gone completely unnoticed.
