There probably hasn’t been a better turnaround in recent years than what we’ve seen with The New Day.

Big E, Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston were three uber-talented stars that were directionless and were lost in the shuffle amongst a stacked card.

NEW DAY STRUGGLES

Forming a group proved to be a stroke of genius, eventually, but fans that have been along for the whole ride will know that it was anything but smooth sailing. That was obvious from the get-go when it was thought that they were going to be a group of preachers led by Woods.

That then changed to the rumours that were doing the rounds online that the trio voicing their frustrations at not advancing their careers would result in them joining forces and become another version of the Nation of Domination, something they laughed off when they appeared on WWE Network’s Table For 3.

You could argue that their rocky start had to happen.

They didn’t get over right away, and fans didn’t give them a break as the ‘New Day sucks’ chants quickly caught on, despite their positive attitudes. Eventually, the audience warmed to them and the rest is history as they broke records and entertained millions of fans.

However, appearing on Chris Jericho’s Talk is Jericho podcast, the trio revealed that Vince McMahon genuinely believed fans would embrace them as the good guys, before Xavier Woods claimed that the boss was upset at the reaction and that fans didn’t get behind it.

NECESSARY HEEL TURN

Kofi explained: “Actually, when we first – he gave us the idea that we said we would try to [be face] and if down the line it didn’t work, then we could turn heel.

“And he was kind of just like, ‘Yeah, yeah we can go ahead and turn,’ but in his mind, I think he thought that it was going to be the greatest baby face thing.

“A few weeks later we went in and we were like, talking to him and he was like, ‘Yeah, you know, I thought that this was going to be a really big baby face deal and I thought people were going to be getting behind it.’”

Jericho sounded like he was in disbelief at the fact that Vince actually thought this idea would work, before Woods chimed in and explained he was hurt that it didn’t work as he’d hoped.

He added: “You could hear the pain in his [Vince] voice. Like he said, he became hurt.”

You can understand why Vince would be annoyed that his initial idea didn’t work out as planned, but considering how much money they’ve made him during their run as the New Day, he probably wiped away those tears with crisp $100 bills a long time ago.
