Being the quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys does have some perks, but Tony Romo never could have dreamed that he would one day achieve a childhood dream of suiting up for an NBA team and taking the floor. That’s exactly what happened Tuesday night as the Dallas Mavericks signed the former signal caller to an honorary contract with the team for a day. Romo took part in shootaround and was even introduced along with the starting lineup before tip-off.Prior to the game, Dirk Nowitzki took to the microphone to speak to both the fans and the man who played under center for so many Sundays in the Lone Star State. The entire scene was very touching for everyone involved as many fans got a chance to truly thank number nine.He said: “We’re here to celebrate and honor my good friend Tony Romo. Thanks for everything you’ve done for Dallas. You’ve represented us great and we’re all proud of you. Thank you very much. Go Tony Romo.”

Romo logged 13-years with “America’s Team” and despite some rough patches, he is still well-liked among the fanbase who saw him attend four Pro Bowls during his career. It’s very rare to see professional athletes in awe, but the former quarterback fit the bill on Tuesday.

In a pre-game shooting session he cashed in a couple of long-distance shots and even managed to score on some Mavs in a one-on-one drill before the game. Even though he didn’t play, the entire night was one to remember for all fans of the area’s teams.

Fan Appreciation Night went off without a hitch and the team shop was selling number nine shirts with Romo’s name on the back. The entire inventory was sold out by the end of the first quarter as fans flocked to have a souvenir to remember the entire day.

Both franchises also made a point to document the process on social media, which meant that by tip-off all of the NBA world had eyes fixed on what exactly was going on with the Mavericks.

The only way it could have been better is if the team could have found a way to come up with a win. This entire season has felt like Dallas was looking for an identity to cling to after Dirk retired and the last vestiges of the championship walked out of the door with him.

Instead, the lasting memories of the season will be celebrating great careers while the players are around to enjoy it.
