Russell Westbrook finally achieved the impossible a week ago when he became the first NBA player since Oscar Robertson to average a triple-double for a season. Most pundits and fans believed that no one would equal that mark again in the modern era. Some joked that Westbrook would be able to accomplish the feat after being truly unleashed due to Kevin Durant’s departure over the summer. What started out as jest has become a full-on fact after the course of a frantic regular season in Oklahoma.Athletes from all corners of the sports world sent out their congratulations via social media and even the most ardent critics of the point guard had to yield in presence of such an accomplishment. Now, the Thunder are looking at the last game on their schedule before the playoffs. The two-time All-Star Game MVP will be in the house and he will have historic company as ESPN is reporting that The Big O will be present for the final game of the historic triple-double season. Having the man who Westbrook surpassed on hand signals something big is in the works.Royce Young also mentions that there is some sort of ceremony planned for the guard at the game, but no other details are available at this time. This sort of thing is not commonplace and that makes sense because nobody believed that a 55-year-old record was in jeopardy.

A season-long highlight reel for the point guard has been on display every time he takes the floor at home or on the road. There have been earth-shattering dunks, buzzer beating three-pointers and lightning-quick fastbreaks in rapid succession.

Robertson recently penned a piece for ESPN’s The Undefeated where he praised the play of the man who broke his record. He has been vocal in his support all season and now with the record clinched, he has even less reason to be silent.

The NBA’s MVP award is still very much up for grabs as the season draws to a close. The four-way race between Westbrook, James Harden, LeBron James and Kawhi Leonard is very tight and any one of them could be the winner.

In the later parts of the season Harden and Oklahoma City’s star have isolated themselves as the favourites. They are both flirting with real history and the triple-double record might be enough to push Russ ahead for good.

Fans will have to wait for later tonight to see what OKC has planned for their MVP, no matter what the rest of the NBA thinks.
