Gennady Golovkin is all-in on getting a superfight of his own this year, and the latest development seems to nail shut a unification bout with Bille Joe Saunders.

Golovkin had previously said he wanted to unify all middleweight titles, even naming Saunders following his victory over Daniel Jacobs. It appears the Jacobs fight did enough damage to deter GGG from taking on what would have been a quick turnaround for the unification fight.

Saunders' promoter said in an interview that Golovkin may have been dealing with some sort of injury, but his camp has yet to confirm that. Head trainer Abel Sanchez did, however, open up a bit about the current state of GGG after a tough fight with Jacobs.

“He was sore,” Sanchez told Chris Mannix of Yahoo Sports. “He had a 12-round fight. I didn’t see it the first day in the dressing room. Usually the second or third day you start to feel it and I didn’t check in with him right after.

"After a long training camp, I’m the last person he would want to see. He is not a complainer. It’s just natural soreness. It was a difficult fight.”

This, it seems, is all part of GGG's camp's plan on securing a superfight with Canelo Alvarez later in the year, according to Mannix.

Alvarez and GGG have long been one of the top fights fans are clamoring to see, and it appears the decision will be for Golovkin to remain patient and hope his team can secure the big fight for later in the year.

Discussion between Canelo and GGG's promotions have left them with a circled fight month of September, but nothing has been set in stone yet. Canelo is represented by Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions, and De La Hoya was pleased to hear the news.

“All of our focus is on Canelo and Chavez. I actually didn’t even know [Golovkin] wasn’t going to fight in June. That’s obviously a good indication but our focus is on Canelo and Chavez.”

It seems the Jacobs fight took a bit more out of GGG than his camp anticipated, and getting back up for a fight that would have to happen relatively soon is something they'd rather avoid. Keeping GGG's mystique and undefeated record intact is key in a Canelo superfight.

While it may look like "ducking," it's a complex situation and there's simply too much at stake for GGG to risk a fight with Saunders with a Canelo fight looking more and more possible.
