Fernando Torres experienced some unbelievable highs and some crushing lows during his eight-year spell in England. The Spanish striker was formidable during his first three years with Liverpool. Everything he touched turned to gold.He subsequently became the most expensive player in the history of British football when Chelsea splashed out £50 million for his services in January 2011.His spell at Stamford Bridge, though, was an unmitigated disaster.Yes, he may have left London with FA Cup, Europa League and Champions League winners’ medals but he failed to score the goals he was signed to deliver.

Torres has rediscovered his confidence with Atletico

In 142 appearances for Liverpool, he scored 81 goals. In 172 matches for Chelsea, he only netted 45 times.

Torres’ career appeared to be as good as over when he only scored one goal in 10 appearances during a forgettable loan spell with AC Milan during the 2014-15 campaign, but he has rediscovered his form and confidence back with his beloved Atletico Madrid.

The 33-year-old was given a hero’s reception on his return to the Vicente Calderon back in 2015 and although he’s not exactly prolific these days - 25 goals in 104 matches - he has produced some magical moments, such as his overhead kick against Celta Vigo earlier this season.

Torres produced a horrendous miss tonight

Tonight, however, Torres spurned a golden opportunity to double Atletico’s advantage in their Champions League quarter-final first leg against Leicester City.

The World Cup winner did everything right so buy himself a yard of space inside the Leicester box, but his subsequently shot went out for a throw-in.

Look away now, Fernando…

In fairness to Torres, he lost his footing. But how costly could this miss prove over the course of the two-legged tie?
