David Villa made a name for himself as a member of Valencia, Barcelona and the Spanish national team. Now, at the veteran age of 35, he’s in presumably the final stage of his career and is spending his time on the pitch with New York City FC in the MLS. Last year, he won the MLS MVP award and his 45 goals over the last three years are more than any other player in that span.On Friday night, he scored what may go down as the best goal of the year against the Philadelphia Union at Talen Energy Stadium.Near midfield, Villa gathered a clear from his teammate, set his left foot and delivered a strike that has to be seen to be believed.Keep in mind that the goal also came in the 90th minute to put the game out of reach 2-0, which makes it even more miraculous.Check out the incredible play below:

The chip came just a couple of steps past the halfway line, which is just preposterous.

In fact, it was from 53.5 yards away, which was the longest goal scored by an MLS player since at least 2012, when the stat was first recorded.

Not surprisingly, this isn’t the first time that Villa tried a ridiculously-long goal in an MLS game. Check out his attempt from last season that hit the post.

After the game, he explained his thought process behind taking such a legendary shot.

“I was a little tired from running, so I tried to score a goal,” Villa explained.

He expressed his thanks for the team’s fans after the game on Twitter.

With the victory, NYC FC picked up three points and moved to 3-1-2 on the season, tying the Columbus Crew SC at the top of the Eastern Conference with 10 points apiece.

Manager Patrick Vieira commented on the epic goal to reporters after the game, via the team’s official website.

“I think he’s David. The goal that he scored showed all his talent,” Vieira said in the post-match press conference. “It’s one of the best goals in the league so far. It’s good for us because that gives us the three points. It was an important goal and an unbelievable goal.”

With six months still go to in the regular season, there’s plenty of time for someone else to unseat Villa with the goal of the year, but as of right now, this was the best goal we’ve seen.
