As painful as it is to admit, Serie A just isn’t what it used to be anymore.AC Milan and Inter Milan used to be nothing short of world-beaters during the 1990s and into the 21st century. With players such as Marco van Basten, Ronaldo, Cafu, Adriano and Paolo Maldini on their books, it’s not difficult to see why.Now though, both sides struggle to make the top three, never mind challenge for the title. Furthermore, Serie A as a whole has been sapped of its star players with Juventus establishing something of a domestic monopoly.

Something that the league, AC and Inter haven’t lost, however, is the Milan derby.

Furthermore, today proved the heated clash is as alive as ever with the two sides thrashing out a dramatic 2-2 draw.

There were no real favourites coming into the match but if anything, it was the Rossoneri with the wind in their sails and a two-point advantage to boot.

That was certainly wasn’t reflected in the opening exchanges of the derby, though.

Antonio Candreva fired home to give the ‘home’ side the lead in the 36th minute before Mauro Icardi arrived to double the advantage before halftime. Nevertheless, Milan gave themselves hope via Alessio Gagliardini’s strike with seven minutes to play.

Unsurprisingly, this prompted AC to throw the kitchen sink at the affair and pile everybody into the box. This was no more the case than when they won a last-gasp corner two minutes beyond the allotted end of injury time.

With the corner avoiding an Inter head, Samir Handonovic was caught out of position and Cristian Zapata lunged in at the back post.

Via an acrobatic left-footed strike, the Colombian struck the underside of the bar with the ball crossing the line before Gary Medel lumped it clear. The goal line technology confirmed the goal and confirmed the equaliser.

The incredible scenes can be seen below:

A 97th minute equaliser against your biggest rivals, not bad hey?

The mass hysteria from the upper tier of the San Siro was simply incredible and players and staff alike joined in the celebrations on the touchline. After all, even Gianluigi Donnarumma had gone up for the corner.

Excitement spilled over onto Twitter too and excitable Milan fans were out in force. Here are the pick of the tweets:

So both the fortunes of the Milan sides and Serie A may have taken a nosedive in the past decade, but it hasn’t completely lost it’s magic. It can only be hoped that such an inspired moment serves to reinvigorate one of football’s most famous clubs.
