Captain Gary Jones insists he has "unfinished business" with Rochdale after agreeing new terms at Spotland.
The club`s all-time leading appearance maker, who turns 32 next week, has put pen-to-paper on a two-year contract extension.
"I'm made up to be honest because I love it here at Rochdale," Jones told the club`s official website.
Jones added: "I felt I made a mistake leaving last time and I'm not going to do that again. I missed everything about Rochdale during my time at Barnsley.
"I believe there is unfinished business here at Spotland. We are certainly going in the right direction on the field as the last two seasons have proved and I'm sure there is more to come in the future. I only have one aim now and that is to see us promoted."
Manager Keith Hill said Jones is the club`s "most important signing of the summer" and added: "He had the opportunity to go to a couple of other clubs or to wait on his options but he decided he wanted to stay with us and I'm delighted by that."
