What Jose Mourinho did moments before Marcus Rashford's winner v Anderlecht

Manchester United were probably expecting a far easier night in the second leg against Anderlecht at Old Trafford on Thursday.

After earning a 1-1 draw in Belgium last week, the Red Devils looked on course to ease to the last-four of the competition when Henrikh Mkhitaryan fired home inside 10 minutes.

But Anderlecht certainly didn’t go down without a fight.

Midway through the first-half, Sofiane Hanni equalised after Youri Tielemans had struck the bar. It was a goal they fully deserved after putting the United goal under a lot of pressure.

And, during the second half, United were unable to retake the lead with Anderlecht forcing the tie into extra-time.

United’s season was now hanging by a thread.

With Champions League qualification via their league position looking unlikely with them needing to overhaul Liverpool or Manchester City to finish in the top four, United know that winning the Europa League is their easiest passage in Europe’s elite competition.

Therefore, you can’t blame everyone associated with the club feeling a little bit nervous after the scores remained level after the first-half of extra time.

The fans might have been praying - but Mourinho had a plan.

The Portuguese boss was seen kissing what appeared to be a little book that he had pulled out of his pocket just moments before Marcus Rashford scored a 107th minute winner.

But what was Mourinho doing?

Well, luckily for us, he explained after the match.

"It is not because of this that we score [laughing],” he told reporters.

“I do it so many times, maybe you just saw it today. I do it for 17 years. It's just my religion and faith.”

Interesting stuff. Watch out for this the next time United need a bit of luck in a big match.
