Cavaliers GM discusses LeBron James' impact and his perfect nickname

LeBron James has the Cleveland Cavaliers cruising through the first round of the NBA Playoffs, up 3-0 on the Indiana Pacers.

LeBron, fresh off a triple-double to take a commanding series lead, once again looks like the most impactful player in the playoffs this year. The King is on a quest to defend the NBA title he brought to Cleveland last year, and he’s as focused.

Cavaliers general manager David Griffin was able to bring LeBron back and trade for Kevin Love in a franchise-altering summer, and the architect of the defending champions opened up about King James in an exclusive interview with Cavaliers blog Fear the Sword

Griffin was candid about his observations regarding the roster, but it was his insight on watching James so closely over the past few seasons that stood out. Perhaps the nickname he has for LeBron is the best one yet aside from The King.

“I call him ‘cheat code’ because you know you’re going to get the best of every offensive player you put him with. Defensively he’s taken a lot more plays off this year than he has in the past, but you’ve seen in these first two games he can do whatever he wants,” Griffin said.

“And I say this too, LeBron is better at being a big than all the bigs and he’s better at being a small than the smalls, and he’s the only player in the NBA that that’s true.”

Griffin was also asked what the first thing he’s noticed about LeBron since his return to Cleveland, and the GM went straight for the heart of the matter. The reigning NBA Finals MVP is a cut above the rest of his contemporaries.

“First of all he’s so much better than everyone else it’s ridiculous. There’s no one else even in his stratosphere in terms of how impactful they are,” Griffin said.

The kicker? This interview took place before James’ brilliant Game 3. He dominated, dropping 41 points with 12 rebounds and 13 assists. The triple-double was enough to edge out the Pacers in a 119-114 victory in Indiana.

Clearly the Cavaliers had their Cheat Code activated because LeBron is leading the charge through the Eastern Conference playoffs. The Cavaliers look like the class out East once again as the Boston Celtics and Toronto Raptors struggle in the first round.

LeBron, meanwhile, looks unstoppable as ever. Good luck stopping Cheat Code on his path to a fourth NBA championship.
