Harry Redknapp took charge of Birmingham City for the first time on Sunday afternoon after replacing Gianfranco Zola last week.The 70-year-old took the job knowing he had three matches to keep the Blues in the Championship, starting against his new employers’ bitter local rivals Aston Villa.Perhaps Birmingham would benefit from a new manager bounce and respond to Redknapp’s demands? Defeat in the Second City derby would leave the club in serious trouble with just two matches left to play.But it was a disappointing start for Redknapp, whose side were beaten 1-0 after Gabby Agbonlahor broke the deadlock midway through the second half.The result means Birmingham’s winless run now spans 10 matches, dating back to late February.

Redknapp takes sly dig at Agbonlahor

Redknapp, however, was in no mood to praise 12th-placed Villa for their victory.

Similarly, he was in no mood to praise Agbonlahor. Instead, he directed a somewhat unnecessary dig at the 30-year-old.

“Gabby? He's done well today, he's had ten minutes, that'll keep him happy for another year won't it. Fantastic,” Redknapp was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

Wow.

Even though the performances have deteriorated for Agbonlahor, whose last goal for Villa came back in February 2016, digging him out like that is pretty harsh by Redknapp.

Redknapp not impressed by Villa

The veteran English manager added: “We can't sit here and say Villa were good can we? Be honest. We've seen fantastic teams here over the years and Steve [Bruce] has a lot of work to do if that's the best they can do.

“We didn't deserve to lose the game. I don't think our keeper got his gloves dirty. I'm very encouraged. When they've won two out of 24 and you come in, it scares you to death. But we've worked hard this week on the training ground. I thought they carried it out to a T, just didn't get the break when we needed it.”
