Usually a 5-4 scoreline in football is a cause for celebration, and even those on the losing side can often tip their hat at being part of a nine-goal thriller.

However, Inter Milan aren't your average club, apparently, and after going down by that scoreline to Fiorentina over the weekend they took a dramatic step by issuing an official statement.

Despite sitting in seventh place with nothing left to play for this term, the club's hierarchy were so dismayed at the turn of events that they took what they deemed to be official action.

A hat trick from Mauro Icardi wasn't enough to bring home anything from the game, coming too late in the day to have any effect other than being a consolation.

An early strike from Fiorentina's Matias Vecino set the hosts on their way before parity was restored by Ivan Perisic. Icardi gave Inter the lead 10 minutes before the break but the second half turned into something of a free-for-all.

Defender Davide Astori restored parity just over the hour mark before Vecino gave Fiorentina the lead for the second time two minutes later.

Striker Khouma Babacar's nine-minute double put the result out of Inter's reach, but Icardi hit back with a brace of his own towards the end.

Put simply, it was a breathless encounter, and fans of Italian football will be hoping to see more games like this in the future.

However, Inter's management were far from happy, and posted a long statement about the result on their official website after the final whistle.

The statement alluded to bringing the players in for extra training sessions as well as giving a vote of confidence to head coach Stefano Pioli.

“The manner of the defeat at Fiorentina was unacceptable for our supporters bot in Italy and abroad, and we are determined to put this right,” the statement read.

"Our target remains to finish as high as possible in Serie A and qualify for European competition, by giving the maximum in every match, and for the players to represent the club's colours with honour and pride as befits the history and tradition of this great club."

It's not often that a club will release a statement after defeat in such a closely fought contest, but stranger things have happened.

Sitting nine points behind Atalanta in the Europa League spot, Inter's chances of Europe are slim, bordering on nil, so the owners are being rather optimistic if they think they are going to make it into the competition next term.
