“Oh God.”Two words that may have just killed a journalist’s dream of ever climbing the ladder and earning a Pulitzer in the future.Well, then again, maybe his chances were already slim. It’s safe to say that many still read The Sun, but it now has the growing reputation that sees anyone of famous status recoil in horror at their press conferences.Maybe because the name alone suggests that the world revolves around them, or because they have published questionable front page stories over the years about controversial topics like the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, Brexit, and the NHS.Whatever way you look at it, they’re just not well liked. And one person who has seemingly joined that list is newly reinstated tennis star Maria Sharapova.Sharapova was banned for 15 months last year after failing a drugs test for a substance she had been taking for many years, but had recently been added to the banned list by tennis officials. It’s hardly surprising since the newspaper group called her agent Max Eisenbud “a creep” in one article and have been quick to brand her with the nickname “drugs cheat” in most of their articles before giving the latest news on her.Well, in Stuttgart, following her quarter-final win again fellow Russian Ekaterina Makarova, she attended a press conference and boy did she get her own back on them. When The Sun journalist Dan King announced himself, Sharapova digested the name and followed sharply with, “Oh God,” and sighed heavily. The Journalist tried to make light of it saying it was nice to see her too, but the Russian star knew this was her chance to humiliate The Sun on a global stage. She asked Dan King: “I don’t think The Sun has ever been in Stuttgart, have they?” When he confirmed they hadn’t, she added the icing on the cake. “First time, wow. Virgins.”

There was laughter in the press conference and it was obvious the journalist didn’t know how to react.

Twitter loved her for it.

The video of the exchange went viral, and many Twitter users and The Sun haters loved Sharapova for her comments and took to Twitter to comment on it.

One user said: "Lol at Sharapova calling the Sun virgins,” whilst another posted: “Game set and match.”

There were a few, though, who didn’t agree.

One user said: “She’s a cheater though.”

Cheater or not, Sharapova is back playing tennis. She has paid her debt and should now be left to compete as a sports star.

She faces France’s Kristina Mladenovic in the semi-final today.
