With 22 red cards to his name since joining Real Madrid back in 2005, it’s fair to assume Sergio Ramos will never, ever change.

The hot-headed centre-back received his latest red card against Barcelona in the Clasico just over a week ago.

His rash challenge on Lionel Messi proved costly as Madrid went on to lose the match 3-2, offering their fierce domestic rivals a way back into the title race in the process.

Zinedine Zidane surely would have had words with Ramos ahead of this evening’s crunch Champions League semi-final first leg against Atletico Madrid at the Bernabeu.

‘Keep your composure, stay cool,’ that sort of thing.

But Ramos, even at the age of 31, struggles when it comes to ignoring the red mist once he crosses that white line - particularly in the big matches.

And the defender probably should have been shown the 23rd red card of his Madrid career during the opening 45 minutes against Atletico.

Ramos was up for a corner and inexplicably smashed Lucas Hernandez in the back of the head with his forearm.

Twitter stunned Ramos avoided a red card

Incredibly, neither the referee not his assistant on the far side spotted the incident and the Madrid star went unpunished, to the disbelief of football fans on Twitter…

It didn't take long for the jokes to start...

What was Ramos thinking?

His side were 1-0 up at the time - thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo’s opening goal in the 10th minute - and Zidane will be livid once he sees the incident back.

Ramos almost cost his team in yet another big match but, on this occasion, got lucky.

Surprisingly, there’s been no comment from Gerard Pique on Twitter. Yet…
