Antonio Tarver is a boxing lifer, he has spent his entire existence around the game and reached the mountaintops of the sport. His achievements include a bronze medal from the 1996 Olympic games.
Now, at 48-years-old, his fighting days are firmly behind him at this point in his life. He actually has moved over to the MMA side of things as a coach of a team down in Coconut Creek, Florida.
The Magic Man got asked about the Superfight of the Century on The MMA Hour and he gave his take on the bout between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather. Much like other former fighters when asked about the proposed match, he was extremely blunt.
Tarver said: “Not a chance in hell. Because Conor McGregor can’t beat the top-20 in the division, how the f--- is he going to beat Floyd Mayweather? Not a f---ing chance in hell (of even a puncher’s chance), because he’s not punching with those four-ounce gloves on.
“He’s punching with 10-ounce gloves on. Big difference. It’s a money fight. I don’t know if it’s a mockery, but it’s a money fight. That’s what it’s all about. Conor McGregor can’t beat Nate Diaz in a boxing match. In a boxing match, [Diaz] will beat his a**, and there’s a whole lot of other fighters out there who will beat his a** in a boxing match.”
His stance here is shared by a number of his contemporaries. Also, he stopped short of calling the bout an outright travesty as he understands the need for both men to capitalise on the earning potential there in such a fight.
Mayweather is 49-0 for a reason and he is widely regarded as one of the best boxers ever and the best defensive competitor of the modern era. His skill at avoiding huge shots and luring his opponents into crucial mistakes is second to none.
He continued to say that the experience in a ring is completely different from how his octagon bouts have gone. The endurance level is different according to Tarver and McGregor will need to adjust to survive against Mayweather.
Notorious is not going to take no for an answer when it comes to this particular fight. Nothing is going to stop his camp from pursuing Mayweather as the biggest prize in combat sport at the moment.
The fight still doesn’t have a date and until that becomes hard and fast, there will be more waiting on the part of the fans. Time will tell if the fight comes together or not. Dana White has been in talks with Mayweather’s camp about details, but nothing is final.
