Sean Gregan has spoken of his relief at Oldham's decision to do a U-turn and put a new deal on the table after initially letting him go.
The 35-year-old has signed a new one-year contract despite first being told by manager Dave Penney that he was being released for financial reasons.
Gregan said: "It was a strange situation because I've never been out of contract in my career and have always been bought when I moved clubs."
He continued: "I would say it was a nice surprise when I picked up the phone and Dave was on the other end.
"Joe (Royle) told me he rated me over the back end of the season when he was here and the new manager told me I wasn't being kept on for financial reasons.
"The question of an alternative deal was never put so I was delighted when the call came and I think it's a good move all round."
