Fair play is something that’s very important for football fans.Nobody likes to see their side cheat their way to victory no matter how desperate they are to win.But it seems nobody told Paris Saint-Germain that as they attempt to overhaul Monaco in the Ligue 1 title race during their clash against Bastia. After midfielder Blaise Matuidi went down in the opposition box in the first-half, Bastia goalkeeper Jean-Louis Leca checked to see if he was alright when the ball went out of play. But the PSG players weren’t worried about the welfare of their player.Instead, they took a quick throw-in and continued their attack.Marco Verratti picked up the ball and, despite Julian Draxler standing inside the six-yard box telling his teammate to put the ball out of play, the Italian smashed the ball into the top corner with Leca busy tending to the injured Matuidi. It caught the away goalkeeper totally unaware and put PSG 2-0 up.While the saying goes: ‘Play to the whistle,’ surely Verratti was out of order.

Of course, you can understand PSG’s desperation to win against Ligue 1’s bottom club. A win would put them level on points with Monaco at the top of the league, although they would have played two more games.

Di Canio's sporting behaviour

Maybe they should take a leaf out of the legendary Paulo di Canio’s book, though. When the former West Ham striker was playing against Everton, he stopped play by catching the ball when opposition goalkeeper Paul Gerrard went down injured.

Instead of tapping the ball into an empty net, Di Canio caught the ball to stop play so Gerrard could receive treatment.

Brilliant.
