New Southampton boss Alan Pardew is set to offer a contract to striker Stern John.

The Trinidad & Tobago international, who spent last season on loan at Bristol City, is a free agent after his previous Saints deal ran out at the end of June, but he is still training at the south-coast club.

Pardew told the Echo: "I think it would be good for Southampton to get a contract sorted for Stern, I think it would be good for me and for the club. He has made it quite clear he wants to stay and I'm pleased about that because I think he'll be important for us."

The Saints manager added: "His strength and his ability if you look at his goals to games ratio all suggest he will get goals in this division and I certainly think that."
