Southend winger Damian Scannell's miserable week has taken another turn for the worse after it was confirmed he has contracted swine flu.

The 24-year-old was ruled out for up to six weeks on Monday after an X-ray revealed he had damaged tendons and ligaments in his ankle in Saturday's friendly at Dagenham.

And to compound Scannell's misery he was diagnosed with swine flu on Wednesday and has been ordered to rest and stay at home.

Meanwhile, Francis Laurent scored the only goal of the game as the Shrimpers beat Barnet in Tuesday night's pre-season friendly at Underhill.
