Watford will watch Morton's sought-after winger Jim McAlister in action against Dundee before deciding whether to make a bid.

McAlister has spent the last few days on trial at Vicarage Road but has returned to Scotland and will feature for Morton in their Scottish First Division opener.

Manager Davie Irons said: "I don't think Watford will put any bid in for Jim before Saturday but there's a very small chance."

He added: "At the moment he's in my plans for going to Dundee. Watford have been watching him for a number of months now, as well as some other clubs, but they wanted to watch him up close as Malky Mackay hasn't seen him in action personally."
