Darren Ambrose scored twice to send Crystal Palace through to the second round of the Carling Cup following their 2-1 win over Torquay.

Cardiff maintained impressive form at their new stadium with a 3-1 win over Dagenham.

Jermaine Johnson scored in either half as Sheffield Wednesday cruised through to the second round with a 3-0 win over League Two side Rochdale.

A second-half goal from substitute Daniel Bogdanovic ended Barnsley's frustration as the Reds made progress in a 1-0 win at Lincoln.

Stephen Dobbie's second-half brace and a further strike from skipper Garry Monk saw Swansea cruise top a 3-0 win over Brighton and an early goal from Graham Dorrans and an own goal from Michael Jones gave West Brom a 2-0 win at Bury.

David Mooney and Nicholas Bagnall both bagged a brace in Reading's 5-1 win over Burton, while Preston also cruised to a 5-1 win over neighbours Morecambe.

Matt Sparrow and Paul Hayes were on target in Scunthorpe's 2-1 win over Chesterfield, while Daniel Nardiello's strike gave Blackpool a 2-1 win at Crewe.

Wayne Routledge's second-half hat-trick helped QPR ease to a 5-0 win at Exeter and Nicky Maynard grabbed to only goal to help Bristol City past Brentford.

James Coppinger brought Notts County back down to earth as his strike gave Doncaster a 1-0 win, while a George Boyd-inspired Peterborough cruised to a 4-0 win at Wycombe.
