Stoke boss Tony Pulis still believes he can persuade Wales defender James Collins to move to the Britannia stadium.
Pulis has so far managed only to bring in midfielder Dean Whitehead from Sunderland for £3million, and is hoping that further talks with West Ham's Collins will see a £5million deal completed.
He said: "On Collins, I think both sides are only a little bit apart on that one. I just hope we can all get around the table again."
He added: "I certainly do not think it is dead and he is a player I would like, along with others before the transfer deadline."
But Pulis has found it hard to tie up deals this summer.
"I have not worked harder in a summer than this year, but it has been very difficult to get players in this time around," he said.
"I have worked on several deals but nothing has come off, maybe a couple will drop for me in the next week or so."
