Colchester boss Aidy Boothroyd has appointed John Ward as his new assistant manager.

Ward, who managed Carlisle until November last year, has left his post as assistant manager at cash-strapped Stockport to take up the role.

The 58-year-old started his career as assistant to Graham Taylor at Watford from 1982, and then followed Taylor to Aston Villa in 1987.

Since then, Ward has been the manager York, Bristol Rovers, Bristol City, Cheltenham and Carlisle.
