Original plans have been revealed for a program involving two top stars.

Ever since former WWE Champion AJ Styles made his WWE debut back at the 2016 Royal Rumble PPV (pay-per-view) event, fans have been dreaming about possible opponents for him. Styles has wrestled some top names while under the WWE banner such as Kevin Owens, John Cena, Chris Jericho and Dean Ambrose. However, one name that keeps evading him is former WWE Champion Randy Orton.

Both Superstars have gone on record by saying that they would like to wrestle each other in a WWE ring. This has been a dream match for years, but Styles was working in such companies like Ring of Honor, TNA Wrestling, and New Japan Pro Wrestling.

A match between the two stars seemed unlikely until Styles joined the company. Now that he is in the promotion, WWE can finally book this match as they are on the same brand, SmackDown Live.

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter did a mailbag segment on a recent installment of Wrestling Observer Radio alongside host Bryan Alvarez. A fan wrote an email to them and asked about the plans for a feud between Styles and Orton.

Meltzer explained that WWE did have plans for a major feud between the two stars before Orton’s return from injury. However, those plans were scrapped once Orton returned and they decided to turn Styles babyface while he was in the middle of his run as WWE Champion.

WWE then booked Orton in a program with Bray Wyatt on the blue brand. Wyatt would go on to win the WWE Championship at the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view event but lost it to Orton at WrestleMania 33 in April in Orlando, Florida. Orton is still feuding with Jinder Mahal over the championship, and they are scheduled to wrestle each other at the upcoming Battleground PPV event later this month.

Styles, on the other hand, has been pushed down to the card and slotted into a program with Kevin Owens for the United States Championship.

WWE could always book this feud down the road, and it would most likely do great business for the company. Unfortunately, there are not any plans for it to happen soon, which may disappoint WWE fans.
