Zlatan Ibrahimovic cast aside his doubters by making an impressive introduction to life in English football with Manchester United last season.

The Swede proved to be one of the biggest coups in the Premier League; arriving on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain after running his contract down in France.

And the 35-year-old veteran netted 28 times, 17 in the league, as he helped the club to domestic and European glory.

United may have finished sixth in the Premier League, but they won the League Cup in February and added the Europa League - and a spot in this season's Champions League - to their tally in May.

That was with huge thanks to Ibrahimovic, who adapted to life with the Red Devils like a duck to water.

So when the club decided to release the former Barcelona frontman after just one season, following his long-term injury suffered against Anderlecht in the Europa League, fans were undoubtedly disappointed.

Indeed, they have since signed Romelu Lukaku from Everton for a deal eventually set to be worth £90 million. But the fact Ibrahimovic left so soon was a saddening thought.

Mourinho considering Zlatan return

However, Mourinho admitted on Friday that he hasn't ruled out a return for the Swedish striker who is set to return to fitness by December.

LA Galaxy have been linked with Ibrahimovic in the past month or so, but it appears a return to Old Trafford appears more likely.

And according to The Times, United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is remaining in close contact with his agent, Mino Raiola, and could offer Ibrahimovic a short-term deal providing he proves his fitness.

The player himself is keen to return to the club where he enjoyed success in a brief spell last season, while Mourinho feels he will add depth and experience to the squad.

United transfer business not finished

With Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea having all made big money signings so far in the transfer market, and Liverpool reportedly ready to bid £70 million for RB Leipzig's Naby Keita, the Portuguese is not ready to rest on his laurels.

It remains to be seen whether Ibrahimovic would settle for a reduced role - considering Romelu's arrival - but the Swede may otherwise find himself short of other options midway through the season.

Doctors who had operated on the Swede revealed they'd been stunned by Ibrahimovic's progress following his injury, meaning he is likely to be fit for involvement for United in the new year - should they put faith in the striker's fitness.
