History was created at Centre Court in Wimbledon on Sunday as Roger Federer secured his record eighth title in the tournament, taking his Grand Slam tally to 19 overall. The Swiss ace was in phenomenal form as he dominated the final clash against Marin Cilic, wrapping up the contest in one hour and 41 minutes with the scoreline 6-3, 6-1, 6-4.Therefore, he becomes the first man to win Wimbledon that many times, surpassing William Renshaw and Pete Sampras, both victors of the competition seven times previously. After gaining victory to register his second Grand Slam win of the year, Federer was sympathetic towards his counterpart, who struggled with a blister on his left foot halfway through the second set, summing it up in just one sentence.BBC Sport quoted the 35-year-old saying: "It is cruel sometimes."Cilic was visibly emotional at the turn of events, and broke down to tears as he called for a trainer and doctor to address the issue, while the tournament supervisor was also present to oversee the whole situation during the match.Speaking at the aftermath of the contest, the Croatian star said: "It was just a feeling that I knew that I cannot give my best on the court, that I cannot give my best game and my best tennis, especially at this stage of my career, at such a big match."It was very, very difficult to deal with it. That was the only thing."But, otherwise, it didn’t hurt so much that it was putting me in tears. It was just that feeling that I wasn’t able to give the best.“It was definitely one of the unfortunate days for me to happen. I got a really bad blister. I want to thank the physios here, Alejandro and Graham and Dr Phil. They helped.“The last 30 hours, they were just constantly almost with me. They did as much as they could, but unfortunately I still felt the pain.“Every time I had to do a reaction fast, fast change of movement, I was unable to do that.”However, the 28-year-old hailed the former world number one, stating he was the worthy winner of the men's singles crown.“I don’t want to put down his victory in any way,” Cilic continued.“He deserved it completely. These things are part of the sport.”Later, he took to social media, posting on Twitter, congratulating Federer as well as thanking his own fans for the support throughout.

A resurgent Federer will definitely aim to continue the form to secure the highest honours for the remainder of the season after an impressive return on the back of a six-month absence, and currently is ahead of his peers, with Rafael Nadal way behind in second with 15 Grand Slam wins.
