One-season wonders are by no means uncommon in the Premier League.Andros Townsend, Robinho and Asamoah Gyan all briefly shone for Tottenham, Manchester City and Sunderland respectively but quickly faded away. Then you have the likes of Roque Santa Cruz (Blackburn) and Amr Zaki (Wigan), who enjoyed one stellar term in England's top-flight before losing form and moving on.However, there is one player who epitomises - if not created - the modern-day one-season wonder: ex-Swansea City striker Michu. The Spaniard joined Swansea from Rayo Vallecano in 2012 for a mere £2 million and proved to be one of the Premier League's best ever bargains.Eighteen goals in 35 league appearances saw Michu finish fifth top goalscorer in his debut season - only eight behind leader Robin van Persie.Michu's performances at the Liberty Stadium almost landed him a big-money move to Arsenal in the summer of 2013, but Swansea refused to let go of their star striker. And it was all downhill from there. An injury-plaged second season in Wales yielded only 17 appearances and two goals, which prompted Swansea to send Michu out on loan to Napoli the following summer. He returned a year later after barely featuring in Italy and was eventually released by then-Swansea manager Garry Monk in November 2015.Since then, Michu has joined amateur side UP Langreo and later Real Oviedo - 686 days after his last professional game - but his career has now taken another sad turn.Michu has been battling with injuries for the best part of four years now and he's finally thrown in the towel by announcing his retirement, aged 31.

The one-time Spain international plans to move into coaching or a director's role in football, but given his undoubted talent, it's a shame he's had to call it quits so prematurely.

Clinical, skilful and dangerous in the air, Michu's career should have panned out so differently, so let's reflect on the good times at Swansea.
