Accomplished American golfer Phil Mickelson is on the hunt for yet another Major, as he looks set to tackle yet another Open Championships.

He has won five Major championships, three Masters, a PGA Championship and an Open, and is seen as one of the best golfers playing the game at the moment.

However, he is also famous for winning the Open Championship in 2013 despite leaving his driver out of the bag.

Instead of using a driver to tee off, he used a three wood, which surprised many during that Open.

The American has vowed to use the same tactic again this week at Birkdale and this has raised more than a few eyebrows.

Phil Mickelson, though, explained the reasoning behind this tactic and the confident American is keen to put any doubters at ease.

He told the Mirror: "We spent the Saturday and Sunday in the conditions and wind. There wasn't a driver for me until 15, given the way I want to play the course and avoid the bunkers."

Mickelson, who is currently ranked 26 in the world, is an intelligent player and was very keen to get as much time on the course in order to get used to it and the conditions.

The American even went as far as to miss last week's Scottish Open to give him some more practice time.

He went on to explain his intentions regaridng the upcoming competition: “Even on 15, 16, 17, 18, where you could hit a driver, it wasn’t the right fit and there is another couple of clubs I want to have in the bag instead.

"I will put in the three-wood I used at Muirfield in 2013, it is a hot three-wood and I can still get a lot out of it. It is a much easier club for me to hit low, so even if I am into the wind I hit it every bit as far as a driver."

Mickelson certainly has the courage of his convictions and his success this far has come partly as a result of his confidence in his own ability, to not only win, but to win by being unconventional in his style.

He is well known for experimenting and finding new ways to win when other golfers stick with tried and tested methods.

The golfing world will certainly be keen to see how he fares at Birkdale, and if his past record is anything to go by, he has every chance of winning despite his unconventional golfing style.
