Winners of this year's US Open will receive record breaking sum of money

Prize money across tennis has generally seen an increase this year, with Roger Federer and Garbine Muguruza both earning a cool £2.2 million from their respective Wimbledon title wins this year.

This is a trend that is set to continue with this year’s US Open.

The total prize money available throughout all tournaments at this year’s Slam will be in excess of $50 million. $50.4 million to be precise.

The winners of the men’s and women’s singles tournaments will take home a $3.7 million slice of this golden pie.

Runners-up will earn $1.825 million, whilst doubles champions will take home $675,000.

As with Wimbledon, there is prize money for just entering the tournament. Losers in the first round of the singles tournament will take home a guaranteed $50,000.

Every slice of this year’s prize money has seen an increase over last year. Stan Wawrinka and Angelique Kerber both took home $3.5 million in 2016, this year’s winners will earn $200,000 more.

Indeed, even with exchange rates, players can earn more by taking part in the US Open than they could have done at Wimbledon. It pays to be fit for the US Open. Literally.

Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic could miss out on a serious windfall as both look like they could take a break from tennis to get over their respective injuries – the US Open starts on August 28.

As it stands, Roger Federer (after his record eighth Wimbledon title) is odds-on favourite to win the US Open, with Rafael Nadal just behind. Both are playing some amazing tennis this year, so for either to win the title wouldn’t be that surprising.

If Murray or Djokovic can get fit in time for the Open, however, either of them can be considered a serious contender.

Wawrinka, too, who won last year’s singles tournament, could shake off his shock early exit from Wimbledon to hold onto his victory last year.

We could see rising stars such as Dominic Thiem or Alexander Zverev walk away with their first Grand Slam title.

Without Serena Williams competing, the women’s game is more open.

Venus Williams made it to the final of Wimbledon, but lost out to Muguruza – both could win the US Open.

Johanna Konta, Simona Halep, Karolina Pliskova, Victoria Azarenka, and last year’s champion, Angelique Kerber are all names to look out for come August 28.

All you can guarantee is that everyone will be in it to win it with prize money as huge as $3.7 million for the winner of the men’s and women’s singles tournaments.
