Derrick Rose remains one of the most polarizing free agents available, but that might not be for much longer.

Rose is closing-in on finding his next NBA home after wrapping up the final year of his contract in New York with the Knicks. The former Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year isn't what he used to be after multiple leg injuries, though.

That's one of the reasons he's still on the market, waiting to find the right opportunity to present itself. Rose's patience may have paid off if the rumored team he's deep in contract discussions with signs him.

Rose is in "serious talks" about signing a one-year contract to join LeBron James on the Cleveland Cavaliers, reports Brian Windhorst and Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. The Cavaliers have had a silent free agency period, lacking the kind of upgrades necessary to challenge the Golden State Warriors.

Rose is an interesting fit for Cleveland. He's not a floor-spacing guard - he shot just 21.7 percent from deep last season and is a career 29.8 percent shooter from deep - but could be a helpful secondary, or tertiary, ball handler and scorer.

The plus-side for Rose is that he had one of his best seasons in years for the Knicks, averaging his highest points per game (18) average since the 2011-2012 season. While the Cavaliers have plenty of ball handlers, having someone who can score consistently as a complementary off-the-bench player might prove useful.

There's also the "you never know" factor to consider here. Rose was once at the top of the NBA, primed to be one of the next superstar players. Knee injuries ravaged his career for years, though. The Cavaliers would be risking little in a one-year contract scenario, and playing for a title with LeBron might bring out the best in Rose.

It's worth noting that the Cavaliers have yet to replace general manager David Griffin, leaning on the staff leftover from his time in the front office to handle the offseason. The results have been less-than ideal, with James reportedly "frustrated" by the lack of action by Cleveland.

Signing Rose would definitely be some action, and for the price it might be worth the gamble. For Rose, it's an opportunity to play in scenario where the pressure isn't squarely on his shoulders, and a chance at not only seeing the playoffs but making a run at the NBA Finals.

Cleveland would be offering a contract in the $3-5 million range, not having much to work with. It could be an interesting fit for both sides, but it's not over till the names on the contract.
