Despite the competition in the Western Conference getting stiffer with many teams making significant moves in this offseason, the San Antonio Spurs will always remain one of the biggest threats.

As usual, the Spurs have gone about their business in quiet fashion this summer and with Gregg Popovich in charge, it's a guarantee they'll always be competitive.

After cruelly losing Kawhi Leonard to injury in the conference finals against the Golden State Warriors, the franchise's priority this summer is to surround their superstar with the right players to have another go at overcoming the beasts in the Bay Area.

Their most notable free agent acquisition has been small forward Rudy Gay. The veteran signed on in San Antonio on a two-year, $17 million deal.

Just hours into free agency, they re-signed Australian point guard Patty Mills to a new four-year, $50 million deal and they are now focusing on bringing back some important veterans too.

After reports emerged that the franchise is finalising a deal to re-sign Manu Ginobili, it is now being reported that big man Pau Gasol will also be returning to Texas.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Spaniard has agreed to a three-year deal to continue at the AT&T Center.

The 37-year-old joined the Spurs last season and initially signed a two-year deal but opted out of his $16.2 million player option in June in order for the team to have more salary-cap space to acquire more players.

The six-time All-Star averaged 12.4 points and 7.8 rebounds a game in the last campaign and will be entering his 17th season in the NBA.

Gasol suffered a fractured metacarpal on his left hand in January and lost his starting spot to Dewayne Dedmon - who has since joined the Atlanta Hawks.

Despite being benched, the two-time champion embraced his new role in Pop's rotation and became a valuable stretch five to complement the team's needs.

As well as Gay, San Antonio has brought in Joffrey Lauvergne and Brandon Paul in free agency.

The departure of Jonathon Simmons to the Orlando Magic recently, however,  was a big blow to the team as he performed impressively in the playoffs on both ends of the floor.

With little cap space available to attract bigger names, the Spurs will have to make do with what they have at the moment.

Although their moves may be underwhelming, they are the best team in developing young players and it could be time for the likes of Kyle Anderson, Dejounte Murray and Bryn Forbes to seize their opportunity.
