Tonight (Sun. July 23, 2017) the WWE Universe will bear witness to the return of the Punjabi Prison match.

It will serve as the main event for the WWE Battleground pay-per-view (PPV) as WWE Champion Jinder Mahal is set to make his second title defense against "The Viper" Randy Orton. Mahal won the title from Orton back at the Backlash PPV earlier this year, thanks to some help from the Singh Brothers, and made his first successful title defense against Orton at the Money In The Bank (MITB) PPV in "The Viper's" own hometown of St. Louis, Missouri.

Orton demanded another shot at the title after Mahal disrespected his family during their match at MITB, as The Singh Brothers attacked Orton's Hall Of Fame father, "Cowboy" Bob Orton, ringside after being thrown out of the match. SmackDown Live Commissioner Shane McMahon granted this match, however, Mahal was given the right to name the stipulation.

Mahal decided to choose the Punjabi Prison match as the structure that will contain them inside the ring. The only way to win is to escape the first structure that surrounds the ring, before escaping a second and much larger structure to claim victory.

Ex-WWE writer Alex Greenfield recently took to his podcast, Review-A-SmackDown, to offer some insight into the Punjabi Prison match. He reveled that the finished product looked much different from what they designed originally, however, they had already spent so much money on it that they went along and used it. Greenfield also claimed to have been the one to name the match and pitch it to Vince McMahon (quotes via IWNerd):

“It was a Smackdown meeting, we were all sitting around the table and everybody was throwing out ideas. I know Vince likes him some alliteration, so I said: “how about a Punjabi Prison match?’.

"He does this thing that Vince does, he is on this chair that swivels at the head of the table in the writers room. He kind of looks away and you can almost see him tasting the words in his mouth. He’s sitting there and looks away and says: ‘Punjabi Prison, alright, let’s do it, next’. And that was it”
