After not matching expectations last year, the Minnesota Timberwolves have been among the most active teams this offseason and have put together a solid roster ready to compete.

The Timberwolves have the longest playoff drought in the league (13 years) but they are ready to finally end that after acquiring Jimmy Butler, Jeff Teague, Taj Gibson and Jamal Crawford this summer.

Adding those experienced players, and a legitimate star in Butler, to the talented young duo of Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins, should see the T-Wolves challenge for a playoff berth next year.

Prior to the new campaign kicking off, however, the Wolves have another important matter to address off the court as they'll have a huge decision to make.

Wiggins will be eligible for a rookie extension prior to the October 16 deadline and the franchise will have to decide if they want to lock him down to a long-term deal.

Talks between the two parties are ongoing for the extension, which would kick in for the 2018-19 season.

The 22-year-old small forward says he's taking the process "day-by-day" but didn't hesitate when asked if he believed he was a max player.

“I definitely do. Nothing less,” Wiggins told The Crossover.

A max contract extension could see Wiggins receive up to $148 million over five years with a starting salary of $25.5 million.

With many claiming the youngster hasn't lived up to his potential yet, that deal would raise eyebrows across the league.

Then again, Otto Porter received over $100m from the Washington Wizards and it's fair to say he isn't as talented as the Minnesota star.

Wiggins averaged a career-high 23.6 points, four rebounds and 2.3 assists last season and under Tom Thibodeau, he will certainly continue to improve.

Now that he has Butler alongside him, he will be under less pressure to score but he will see less of the ball which could be detrimental to him.

The young wing, however, only sees positives in having the All-Star as a teammate saying they will “complement each other’s game and make each other better,”

In the past week, Wiggins' name has been mentioned in trade rumours involving Cleveland Cavaliers star Kyrie Irving who has requested a move away from Ohio.

Minnesota will have some big decisions to make between now and October but their fans will certainly be in for an exciting season nonetheless.
