Arsenal may have lost to Sevilla this afternoon but they still managed to win the 2017 Emirates Cup.Yep, normal rules don’t apply when it comes to the Gunners’ annual pre-season tournament.Every team is awarded one point for each goal they score - and Arsene Wenger’s side racked up eight points on Saturday after hammering Benfica 5-2.Sevilla, on the other hand, came into Sunday with just four points after beating RB Leipzig 1-0.The Spanish side defeated Arsenal 2-1, thanks to goals from Joaquin Correa and Steven N’Zonzi, but the fact Alexandre Lacazette netted a consolation meant both sides finished the tournament on nine points apiece.

Arsenal won the Emirates Cup on goals scored

Arsenal, however, were awarded the trophy by virtue of goals scored.

How bizarre.

As you can probably image, Twitter took the p*** out of Arsenal fans for celebrating ‘winning’ the Emirates Cup when they’d just been beaten by Sevilla.

Arsenal fans love what Mertesacker did

But Arsenal fans on Twitter were loving what Per Mertesacker did during the trophy parade.

Watch the footage here…

As you can see, Mertesacker simply refused to lift the Emirates Cup and fair play to him for that.

Here’s how Arsenal fans reacted…

And it wasn't just Arsenal fans who enjoyed it...

Had they just beaten Sevilla, it would have been a different story.

But in the end, the post-match ‘celebrations’ all looked very awkward.

None of the players really looked in the mood to celebrate and you can understand why.

Petr Cech did something similar earlier this month

Petr Cech reacted similarly when Arsenal won the International Champions Cup earlier this month.

“Let’s lift the big one at the end of the season,” the Czech goalkeeper told his teammates while refusing to lift the trophy.

Smart thinking by both players.
