Summer Slam is fast approaching and matches are being confirmed across both RAW and Smackdown.

Tuesday night was no different with the United States Championship earning the spot light first as a controversial finish to the title match on Smackdown resulted in another match being made.

During the match the referee would suffer a blow a to the eye so when it came to counting the three count at the end, his version was certainly impaired.

As a result he made the wrong decision and counted the three count when Owens actually had his shoulder off of the mat.

This led to a very unhappy former US Champion backstage at Smackdown and he would confront not only the referee, but the Smackdown Commissioner Shane McMahon and also the General Manager Daniel Bryan.

An irate Owens would be granted a rematch for the US title at Summer Slam, but that wouldn't be quite enough for the New Face of America.

Owens would demand a more competent referee for his rematch and one who wouldn't be hurt so easily.

That was when Smackdown GM Daniel Bryan revealed that McMahon himself would don the black and white shirt for Owens match against Styles at Summer Slam.

A disappointing choice?

Fans have been speculating for several weeks that McMahon could be returning to the ring at Summer Slam this year.

Owens had emerged as a likely opponent for McMahon is he were to enter the ring as a competitor, but that plan clearly now won't be materialising.

Another controversial finish to the match at Summer Slam however could lead to a future match between Owens and McMahon at a later event.

A huge night coming together

While McMahon vs Owens may have been put on hold, the announcement that Styles will once again face off against Owens is just announce big match made for Summer Slam.

It is just the second match from Smackdown Live announced for the event  while Jinder Mahal vs Shinsuke Nakamura for the WWE Championship was announced later in the show.

Joining the Universal title fatal 4-way match between Brock Lesnar, Roman Reigns, Samoa Joe and Braun Strowman and the RAW Women's Championship match between Alexa Bliss and Bayley, Summer Slam is already shaping up to be an interesting night.
