The Centre of Historical and Statistical Investigations of Spanish Football (CIHEFE) has published their list of the top 300 players in La Liga history.

Real Madrid and Barcelona superstars Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi were the only active La Liga players in the top 50.

Ronaldo joined 'Los Blancos' from Manchester United in 2009 and has racked up three more Ballon d'Or awards since winning his first in 2008.

The 32-year-old winger is generally regarded as one of the greatest to ever play the game but comparisons with Leo Messi have been hard to avoid.

Messi, 30, has won five Ballon d'Or's since making his Barcelona debut in 2004.

The Argentine forward recently lost his teammate Neymar, who joined PSG in a record breaking €222m transfer.

"I had the honour of acting with the greatest athlete I have ever seen in my life and I am sure that I will not see another better," said Neymar on Messi. "He became my partner, friend on and off the pitch. Proud to play with you."

The study of the 300 greatest La Liga players was compiled using a number of factors:

  • minutes played per season,
  • how many goals the individual scored,
  • different types of play,
  • penalties or own goals.

Ronaldo down in 17th

Largely because he has only spent eight years in Spain, the CIHEFE list placed Ronaldo far below Messi in 17th.

Former teammate and retired Real Madrid striker Raul Gonzalez was placed 2nd on the list with 524 points.

With years left to rack up points, Messi was dubbed the greatest player in La Liga history with a grand total of 545 points.

Ronaldo has 415 points and could conceivably rise up the list if he remains in Madrid - but he'll surely never catch the magical Argentine superstar.

Other notable names on the list include Iker Casillas placed at 62nd, Sergio Ramos 130th, Dani Alves 164th, Karim Benzema 207th, Andres Iniesta 229th and Fernando Torres in 277th.

The EURO 2016 winning Portuguese forward was today named in Real Madrid's squad to face his former club Manchester United.

The Super Cup final between last season's Europa League winners and Champions League winners is due to take place on Tuesday night in Skopje.
