Last month, Manchester United youngster Timothy Fosu-Mensah cited the case of Marcus Rashford as proof that there’s a chance for him in Jose Mourinho’s first team.

"Marcus played the most games last season so I think what they say about him [Mourinho] is not true. He gives youth a chance," Fosu-Mensah said, per Sky Sports.

"I think as a young player you have to grab the chance with both hands."

The 19-year-old was handed his debut under Louis van Gaal in February 2016 but managed just four Premier League appearances last season.

And he’s set to spend the 2017-18 campaign away from Old Trafford.

Fosu-Mensah is undergoing a medical ahead of a loan switch to Crystal Palace.

The Dutchman worked with Frank de Boer at Ajax before his move to Man United in 2014, so there’s some familiarity with the Palace manager’s system.

It’s a great opportunity for Fosu-Mensah to continue his development and Man United supporters shouldn’t fear that the loan move could eventually lead to the player’s permanent departure.

What Mourinho has said to Fosu-Mensah

According to the Telegraph, the Dutch Under-21 international's future lies at Old Trafford, with Mourinho viewing him as the potential long-term successor to Antonio Valencia at right-back.

The Man United boss has identified an area of improvement for Fosu-Mensah, telling him that he needs to gain greater discipline at Selhurst Park.

So De Boer continues to recruit players from top four clubs. He has already brought in Ruben Loftus-Cheek in a season-long loan move from Chelsea.

And Fosu-Mensah isn’t the first defender to arrive at Palace. Last month, they completed the £7.9 million signing of Jairo Riedewald from Ajax.

De Boer will know all about Fosu-Mensah, who believes his versatility is a great asset.

“If the manager wants me to play centre-back I will play there,” he said. “If he wants me to play defensive midfield I will play there. If he needs to play right-back I will play there.

"I can play them all so it is not a problem."

Man United fans will be keeping a close eye on his performances.
