Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins has confirmed the club "are getting closer" to signing Sheffield United winger David Cotterill.

Swans manager Paulo Sousa revealed his interest in the out-of-favour Blades midfielder last month and the Welsh side are poised to sign Cotterill initially on loan with a view to a permanent move, worth a reported £500,000, in January.

Jenkins said: "We are interested and we have been talking to Sheffield United. We are getting closer. We are certainly closer than we were last week, but nothing has been finalised as yet."

The Blades signed Cotterill, 21, at the end of a three-month loan spell in the summer of 2008, but he has never established himself as a regular in Kevin Blackwell's side.

Cardiff-born Cotterill, who has won 15 full caps for Wales, has made only three starts for the Blades this season.
