Addicks close gap at top

Charlton put a miserable week behind them as they comprehensively beat MK Dons 5-1 to move within four points of leaders Leeds.

David Mooney, Nicky Bailey, Lloyd Sam, Sam Sodje and Deon Burton scored for the Addicks, who were forced to come from behind after Aaron Wilbraham had put the Dons ahead.

Charlton looked determined to put last weekend's FA Cup defeat to Northwich Victoria behind them and came flying out the traps.

Mooney came close to converting a brilliant through-ball after just four minutes, but Dons keeper Willy Gueret got to it first.

The visitors had trouble coping with the pace of winger Lloyd Sam - and Dons midfielder Sol Davis was lucky to escape with a yellow card after he hacked him down in the sixth minute.

However, Wilbraham opened the scoring against the run of play in the ninth minute with a superb volley after a deft flick forward from Davis.

And he could have had another two minutes later, but for Sodje who cleared off the line.

The Dons' lead lasted just four minutes, thanks to Mooney, who belted the ball home from a goalmouth scramble.

With 19 minutes gone Mooney had what looked like a nailed-on penalty shout dismissed by referee Keith Hill after the striker was brought down by Gueret but the linesman had already waved the offside flag.

The Addicks went ahead a couple of minutes later as Nicky Bailey was left unmarked to nod home Sam's cross from the right.

Bailey came close to adding one more on 26 minutes with a 35-yard free kick that held up in the wind and sailed over both sets of players only to hit the crossbar.

Mathias Doumbe almost made it worse for the Dons when he fired straight at his own goal, forcing Gueret into a fingertip save.

However, Sam added a third after the hour mark by beating David McCracken to shoot home from 15 yards.

Sodje made it a stroll for the Addicks when he turned in Bailey's cross, before Burton lobbed in a fifth.

The Dons' frustrations boiled over in injury time when Jason Puncheon's rash slide on Bailey sparked a 20-man brawl.
