Paul Lambert`s Norwich side continued their ascent of the League One table with a hard-fought 2-0 win over struggling League One rivals Tranmere.

Lambert has revolutionised City`s fortunes since he replaced Bryan Gunn in August but saw his charges make hard work of breaking down managerless Rovers until Wes Hoolahan hit a penalty on the hour mark.

Veteran Gary Doherty then doubled the lead from close range with 10 minutes remaining to secure the win.

The result was harsh on Tranmere, who had their chances, but Norwich have now won nine of their last 10 games in all competitions and are chasing down the top two.

Norwich led when Adam Drury struck a firm shot which hit John Welsh and referee Darren Deadman had no hesitation in awarding the penalty for handball.

Hoolahan confidently dispatched the kick into the bottom corner while Doherty made it 2-0 late on with a volley from Hoolahan`s cross to give Norwich a vital three points.
