Curtis Main blasted in the only goal as Steve Staunton led his side to just a second win of the season by beating Burton 1-0.

Darlington defender Stuart Giddings turned a dangerous low cross from Jimmy Philips away from goal as Burton started brightly before Main struck in the sixth minute.

A foul by Albion defender Guy Branston on Mor Diop led to a free-kick which was taken quickly.

The Burton defence were caught out and teenage striker Main neatly side-stepped his man, before firing low into the far corner of the net from 12 yards.

Burton should have equalised in the 51st minute following more good work from Phillips as Richard Walker headed over the bar from close range. The Darlington defence remained stretched and captain Steve Foster slid in to block a goalbound shot from Jacques Maghoma in the 65th minute.

In the 78th minute Tony James cleared a header from Darlington substitute Danny Groves off the line as Darlington secured three points.
