It’s great to see Javier Hernandez back in the Premier League, let’s be honest here.

The Mexican striker became something of a cult hero during his time at Manchester United and, in the opinion of many, should never have been sold.

Louis van Gaal proved the man to offload him, bringing an end to a half-decade spell just weeks after a solid loan campaign with Real Madrid. Chicharito amassed 59 goals in 157 appearances at Old Trafford.

Two years later, though, and the 29-year-old is now pulling on the shirt of West Ham United. Slaven Bilic snapped up the forward after two successful seasons with Bayer Leverkusen.

The coup proves the crowning jewel of an already exciting transfer window for the Hammers.

Uncannily too, Chicharito’s first outing back in England will be up against United in an eagerly awaited clash on Sunday. It’s given the perfect opportunity for the Mexican to reflect on his time up in Manchester.

The focus of said reflections have, essentially, been where things all went wrong and the Red Devils’ stagnation upon Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement. The club is still yet to mount a title challenge since the Scot’s exit.

In light of this, Hernandez has revealed the dressing room’s initial reaction to the decision and it’s fair to say they were caught off guard.

As per the Mirror, he explained: "I didn't see it coming. Nobody did. It was very strange. We were shocked. It was his life.

"He was the manager who brought me here and opened the door to Europe. He gave me a lot of opportunities to live the dream.

"We all knew there was going to be a transition (at United). You cannot have a manager for 26 years – the best manager in history, achieving everything, changing the squad every couple of years, changing players, even all the staff sometimes – there was always going to be a transition.

"The change of Sir Alex retiring, we knew it was going to be very difficult. He was unique in the history of football."

United’s struggles since are testament to the shock and Ferguson’s retirement also sparked the beginning of the end for Hernandez himself at Old Trafford.

A mediocre term under the wing of David Moyes harvested just nine goals – a far cry from the total of 20 in his debut year. It did little to win over the ex-Everton man’s successor.

And with the Manchester Evening News citing a special relationship between Ferguson and Hernandez, it’s no surprise his departure had such an impact.

Even four years on and it seems the club hasn’t fully recovered from the jarring conclusion to 26 years of utter domination.
