The Premier League is finally back, and the fight amongst the top six clubs to challenge for the title looks set to be as fierce as ever.

Liverpool, Arsenal and champions Chelsea have all broke their club-record transfer fees this summer, while both Manchester clubs have invested heavily too.

Following the signings of Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku, Manchester United also brought in Nemanja Matic from rivals Chelsea for £40 million.

The Serbian made 151 appearances for the Blues after returning from Benfica in 2013, but he left Antonio Conte's side to reunite with former boss Jose Mourinho.

Chelsea legend Frank Lampard used to be Matic's teammate, and the Englishman thinks he knows the key reason why his former club allowed him to join a direct rival in United.

The key in Matic's move to Man Utd

Some may believe that the west London club weren't too bothered about his departure, given that fellow defensive midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko joined from Monaco, but Lampard doesn't think that's the case.

In addition to being surprised at the Matic deal, Lampard has claimed that Chelsea didn't want the 29-year-old to leave Stamford Bridge this summer.

"I was surprised to see him (Matic) move to (Man) United, and maybe there is more to this deal than we realise," Lampard revealed to Yahoo Sports, via The Mirror.

"I heard whispers at the back end of last season that he wanted to go, and even if the club cannot come out and say too much about that, maybe there was an element of that in play here when this deal went through."

Lampard, who scored 211 goals in 648 games for Chelsea, continued: "You get the feeling that Chelsea didn't really want Matic to go, but players can push for a move at times."

The 39-year-old also added: "Matic was a big player for Chelsea last season and even though they have signed players to replace him, he is going to be missed.

"And possibly just as significantly, he strengthens Manchester United, there is no doubt about that."

Should Chelsea have sold Matic to United?

Bakayoko may have the edge on Matic in terms of energy and athleticism, but the big Serb's presence in United's midfield should give Paul Pogba a lot more freedom.

Matic was arguably Man Utd's best player in the Super Cup loss to Real Madrid, but only time will tell whether Chelsea will regret their decision.
