Chelsea 2-3 Burnley - safe to say no one saw that coming.

Antonio Conte's men made the worst possible start to their title defence on Saturday afternoon by losing to a side tipped for relegation this season.

Goals from Sam Vokes (2) and Stephen Ward gave Burnley a shock 3-0 lead before half-time at Stamford Bridge following Gary Cahill's 14th-minute red card.

Chelsea's captain produced a nasty studs-up challenge on Steven Defour, giving the referee no choice but to show red.

Alvaro Morata gave his new club hope of an unlikely comeback in the 69th minute after replacing Michy Batshuayi, but 12 minutes later Chelsea were down to nine men.

Cesc Fabregas, having been booked in the first half, received a second yellow card and while David Luiz made it 3-2 with two minutes remaining, the Blues were unable to fully recover.

Speaking on BT Sport after the game, Chelsea legend Frank Lampard said the defeat was disappointing yet not overly surprising.

He said: "Very disappointing, for sure. A surprise? Maybe not. I'm looking at it and thinking there are too many bad noises coming out of the club going into a season.

"Will they bring in a couple of players? We need to hear some good things. One positive is [Alvaro] Morata comes on and scores a goal and makes an assist.

"Terrible start for Chelsea, but first game, a long way to go, but they need to correct these whispers that keep coming out of the club."

Chelsea were inevitably mocked for their defeat by fans on social media, with a couple of big names even getting involved.

Antoine Griezmann's brother, Theo, was one of them and he made no bones about his feelings towards Chelsea losing the first game of their title defence.

Alongside a screenshot of the Chelsea 2-3 Burnley scoreline, Theo mocked the reigning champions for making such a poor start: "CHAMP IS HERE! 😂🏆"

Conte how has a selection dilemma ahead of next weekend's trip to Tottenham, given Cahill and Fabregas will both unavailable.

With Nemanja Matic now at Manchester United and Tiemoue Bakayoko still not match fit, it's a wonder who will play alongside N'Golo Kante in midfield.

As for replacing Cahill, Cesar Azpilicueta will most likely shift back into the middle alongside Luiz and Antonio Rudiger, while Victor Moses will resume his role at right-back.
