It is fair to say that pretty much anyone who shares a court with Federer has to accept that they won't be the crowd favourite.

However, the Dutchman's clever response will have done his reputation no harm, and will no doubt have won him a few new fans.

The game was Haase's first ATP semi-final, and whilst he managed to force a second set tie break, he never truly managed to get a foothold in the game.

He primarily struggled to counter-act Federer's serving game, with the 19-time Grand Slam winner only dropping nine points on his own serve.

The Swiss legend breezed into the final of the ATP event, where he will be looking to claim the crown that Novak Djokovic won in 2016.

Federer will now face Alexander Zverev for the trophy, and victory would bring him his 94th ATP Tour Title, bringing him level with Ivan Lendl in second place of all-time Open Era titles.

It seems from his comments that even he is surprised by the scale of his recent success.

"I have reached levels that I never thought I would be able to reach, winning so many titles. Each title you can add is like a thrill. I am playing tennis to try to win titles."

Federer's year has been nothing short of a fairytale, beginning with his stunning success Down Under to take the Australian Open title in January, beating long time rival Rafa Nadal in a thriller.

He rolled back the years again in July, taking the title at Wimbledon and further cementing himself as one of the greatest players of all time.
