Usain Bolt was denied the fairytale ending to his career that he deserved at the World Championships.

The Jamaican could only manage a bronze medal in his last ever 100m race, as he was usurped by Justin Gatlin and Christian Coleman.

The 4x100m relay provided him with one final chance to go out on a high, but on that occasion, he hobbled off the track clearly nursing a hamstring injury.

For the legendary sprinter to go out like that was heart-breaking, even if it contributed to a shock victory for Team GB.

Bizarrely, there have been some suggestions that the 30-year-old was faking it. If so, he did a pretty convincing job, and there would be no reason for him to jeopardise his team-mate's chances unless he was in real pain.

Of course, most athletics fans have nothing but good words to say about Bolt, but he has still felt the need to respond to his critics by revealing the extent of his injury.

In a series of tweets which have since been deleted but are quoted by the Evening Standard, he explained:

"Sadly I have Tear of the proximal myotendinous junction of biceps femoris in my left hamstring with partial retraction. 3 months rehab.

"I don't usually release my medical report to the public but sadly I have sat and listened to people questioning if I was really injured.

"I have never been one to cheat my fans in any way & my entire desire at the championship was run one last time for my fans.

"Thanks for the continued support my fans and I rest, heal and move onto the next chapter of my life £Love&LoveAlone."

Bolt's injury looks nasty

He also posted an x-ray of his hamstring, but deleted that as well.

Frustratingly, Bolt is now set to endure further disappointment, as he won't be able to fulfil his dream of playing for Manchester United - albeit in a legends match - against Barcelona on September 2nd.

Competitions have always got in the way of previous attempts to get him in a Red Devils jersey, and he will once again miss out on the chance to play alongside Ruud van Nistelrooy, Denis Irwin and Dwight Yorke.

You get the feeling having a trial at Burton Albion isn't going to make up for it.
